<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">How to make a remote call</h2>Most of the presently developed web pages fetch and push the data by remote APIs. Asynchronous Javascript and XML (AJAX) requests are as old as web development dinosaurs, remembering the ancient browsers such as Netscape Navigator.&nbsp;Such a trivial issue as remote calls should be resolved for many years in the current age. It is. How? Let’s go through typical approaches to remote API calls, starting with the most precious one: Axios.&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">What the Axios is</h2>Axios is an open-source, AJAX application programming interface wrapper, which simplifies the development of remote calls. The web developers community likes this library for two reasons: it relies on the Promise API and supports most common browsers. In addition, Axion works well if you need to run it on the server's side, on Node.js.&nbsp;The mechanics of Axion relies on XMLHttpRequest wrapped in a friendly way. On Node.js, it covers “HTTP” requests.&nbsp;But most importantly, as I wrote before – it’s easy to write and understand. Here is an example of how to make a simple GET request.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<pre><code class="language-plaintext">Axios( url ) 
 .then( response-handler ) 
 .catch( error-handler ) 
 .finally( final-handler ) </code></pre>&nbsp;As a promised based API, it allows passing three types of handlers:&nbsp;&nbsp;<ul><li>then – executed after correctly receiving the response,&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>catch – when any error occurs,&nbsp;</li><li>finally – after execution of both previews&nbsp;</li></ul>But, wait! Why use the external library if the native one works well?<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">I am a purist. I use only native API.</h2>Web browsers implement two native ways to do remote calls: XMLHttpRequest and Fetch API.&nbsp;XMLHttpRequest&nbsp;I am not sure if XMLHttpRequest creators lived at the same ages that creators of Netscape Navigator, but the method they created is mature. All widely used browsers support that way of remote calls. But?&nbsp;The first issue is that XMLHttpRequest becomes deprecated in Java Script Specification (ES6). Consequently, in the next few years, the new releases of popular browsers can terminate the support for this method.&nbsp;Another problem is that the XMLHttpRequest is quite raw. To make a request, you must write many lines of code. XMLHttpRequest does not support promises. In consequence, that complex request chains require more nested handlers, which complicates the code. How does the request look like?&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<pre><code class="language-plaintext"> var xhr = new XMLHttpRequest();

It becomes a nightmareFetch API&nbsp;Instead of XMLHttpRequest, the ES6 JavaScript specification provides a nice, promised oriented fetch function. The code looks pretty and similar to Axion:&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<pre><code class="language-plaintext">fetch('https://ghibliapi.herokuapp.com/films')

 	.then(data =&gt; this.movies = data ) ; </code></pre>&nbsp;Unfortunately, this option is not perfect as well. Older browsers do not support the fetch function, not to mention Internet Explorer, which generally does not support the procedure.&nbsp;The response from the web development community was immediate. The fetch API polyfill resolves the incompatibility problem. But it is the external library, like Axion.<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">How does it work? Working example.</h2>To provide you with the working example, I will use the call from previews chapters and display the results in the list. To render the list, I will use a simple Vuejs application.&nbsp;Step 1: Vue and Axion&nbsp;&nbsp;Import both libraries in the head section:&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<pre><code class="language-plaintext">&lt;script src='https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/vue/2.6.11/vue.min.js'&gt; &lt;/script&gt;

What is more, the library also unifies external calls for all browsers and Node.js.&nbsp;From the other perspective, the Fetch API provides the same benefits. Until it is not widely supported, Axion is an obvious alternative. In the future, the library can be an efficient solution for moving to Fetch API smoothly.&nbsp;If you still insist on using Fetch API, you can use a polyfill provided here:<a href="https://github.com/github/fetch"> https://github.com/github/fetch</a>.&nbsp;Additionally, the library provides many valuable futures, which helps develop web applications, for instance:&nbsp;<ul><li>globally scoped configuration, which allows to set-up parameters (headers, base URL, authorisation tokens) in one place&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>interceptors – allowing intercept requests and responses before handling&nbsp;</li><li>cancellation – enabling abandonment of the request on user requests&nbsp;</li></ul>It does not mean that Fetch API does not support those functions. Axios vs fetch API vs XMLHttpRequest – how to make a remote call on Vue.js (and not only)

<h2>Not everyone is a technical ninja.</h2>&nbsp;It is easier to do business if you know HTML and JavaScipt. Because I started my career as a web developer in 2000, the shift for more business-oriented tasks was easier for me. Even if I need to speak with web developers, I know the topic well.But as a CMO or marketing manager, &nbsp;HTML and JavaScript are unlikely to be your best skills.&nbsp;On the other hand, increasing your e-commerce or company website customer experience requires software changes. Improving user-oriented goals with a technical mindset can be a daunting challenge. Sometimes it is easier to do things by yourself.For that reason, I picked three emerging cloud technologies that help you improve the customer experience almost without any coding. In this article, you will learn how to:&nbsp;<ul><li>Be free from technical tyranny – the Tag Manager&nbsp;</li><li>Analyse your customer experience measurements &nbsp;– the web analytics&nbsp;</li><li>Start experiments with your content – A/B testing and personalisation&nbsp; &nbsp;</li></ul>Let’s start with the most technical task at the beginning: integration with tag manager.&nbsp;<h2>Tag Manager – how to be released from technological tyranny!&nbsp;</h2> How to simplify the integration of marketing tools into your website? The Tag Manager streamlines this task a lot. In most cases, to use any marketing tool, you need to inject tracking code into your website template source code. It means that you need to have access to your templates, know how to modify them, and keep the proper order of the instructions. As a consequence of a mistake, the website can go down for the moment or display the content in a not quite right way.&nbsp;Once deployed on your website, the Tag Manager allows you to inject tools such as web analytics, A/B testing or personalisation without coding. The tools provide you with the administration console in which you can easily configure the desired integration.Moreover, the Tag Manager allows you to do more than integrate the analytics, A/B testing and personalisation. The enterprise-level solution, like Liferay Portal or Optimizely, supports the tool as well. Tag Managers are similar to pipes. They connect your website with external resource.&nbsp; &nbsp;Pros:<ul><li>ready to use tag templates allowing integration with standard marketing pixels &nbsp;and tools (developed and tested by Google and developed by community)&nbsp;</li><li>community support (hundreds of youtube tutorials) and good documentation&nbsp;</li><li>many companies providing commercial support&nbsp;</li><li>free&nbsp;</li></ul>Cons:<ul><li>data privacy concerns&nbsp; &nbsp;</li></ul><h3>Matomo / PIVIK</h3>&nbsp;It is an alternative for Google Tag Manager for an organisation that pays a lot of attention to data privacy and security (Wait. Is there any organisation that does not pay attention to that?). Both solutions are based on open-source software supported by commercial companies. Both solutions have more or less the same functions, especially in free versions.&nbsp;Pros:&nbsp;<ul><li>open-source software commercial support available,&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>on-premise and on-cloud hosting variants,</li><li>fully functional replacement of Google. &nbsp;</li></ul>Cons:&nbsp;<ul><li>lack of support from the community&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>the free versions do not contain ready to use templates, so finally, in each integration, you need to code on your own (or choose commercial, on cloud version)&nbsp;</li><li>price – for the commercial version&nbsp; &nbsp;</li></ul><h3>Adobe Launch</h3>&nbsp;Adobe Launch superpower is native integration with Adobe Experience Cloud universe. The Adobe Experience Cloud perfect environment is the big industry. So for sure, if you don’t have a full suite in your organisation, you will not use Adobe Launch. But, in the opposite case, you will be forced to use &nbsp;Adobe Launch.&nbsp;The application is free for Adobe Analytics customers.&nbsp;Pros:&nbsp;built-in integration with Adobe ecosystem&nbsp;&nbsp; workflow and permission policy for managing and deploying tags&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Cons:&nbsp;can not be used separately from Adobe Analysts (part of Adobe Launch)&nbsp;not supported by community&nbsp;because it is “enterprise” software, you need to pay “enterprise” rates for the support&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<h2>Web analytics&nbsp; &nbsp;</h2>Once you have your tag manager, you can add your favourite web or mobile analytics tool. Web analytics allows you to improve the customer experience by setting and measuring your KPIs, such as traffic, bounce rate or conversion. When you master the art of doing web analytics, you can set up and analyse your conversion funnels, which start on your PPC campaign and finish downloading your ebook, signing up for a newsletter, or purchasing a product.&nbsp;Here are some tools which help you build a good customer experience.&nbsp;<h3>Google Analytics</h3>&nbsp;Google rules the market. The tool is the most commonly used analytics platform (https://www.statista.com/statistics/1258557/web-analytics-market-share-technology-worldwide/). Being free, providing the most comprehensive data is in opposition to privacy concerns and data ownership.&nbsp;Pros:&nbsp;<ul><li>most comprehensive web and mobile analytics platform&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>because it is Google, you have access to demographic characteristics of users and interests (remember to mention that in your privacy policy)&nbsp;</li><li>built-in integration with Google ecosystem – directs statistics of AdWords campaigns, integration with Google Search Console (which speed up the</li><li>work with search engines)&nbsp;</li><li>can be used for web, mobile and non-web channels&nbsp;</li><li>tones of youtube tutorials on how to use the tool&nbsp;</li><li>free&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;</li></ul>Cons:&nbsp;<ul><li>the data privacy concerns&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>usability of the tool, people compliant especially about the Google Analytics 4 (GA4)&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;</li></ul><h3>Matomo / Pivik Analytics</h3>&nbsp;Both Matomo and Pivik aim to fill the gap with privacy and data protection. The platforms are mature and have the same capacity as GA. What is most important, you can install both tools on-premise or separate the private cloud.Similar to Matomo and Pivik Tag Manager, the application is open-source and supported by commercial companies.&nbsp;Pros:&nbsp;<ul><li>multiple models: free and commercial, on-premise and cloud&nbsp;</li><li>focus on privacy and data protection&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>similar possibilities as Google Analytics&nbsp;</li><li>commercial support from the company which creates the applications&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>open-source with commercial support (I know, it is subjective – but I am a fan of open source)&nbsp; &nbsp;</li></ul>Cons:&nbsp;<ul><li>not natively integrated (it is not so problematic, you can set up custom parameters)&nbsp;</li><li>no integration with Google Web Console&nbsp;</li><li>fewer tutorials on youtube&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;</li></ul><h3>HotJar</h3>&nbsp;It is a different tool in this category. The HotJar focuses more on how the user interacts with the page (which GA has very simplified). The app support three areas:&nbsp;<ul><li>heatmaps analysis showing statistics on how users use your website&nbsp;</li><li>recording of customer interactions, which allows track single interaction and see where the customer has focus,&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>feedback analysis – allows doing short surveys and analysing the sentiment of your content and website&nbsp; &nbsp;</li></ul>HotJar can supplement the web analytics tools, so it is challenging to compare pros and cons with Google Analytics or Matomo/Pivik. I prefer to highlight how the tool can benefit:&nbsp;<ul><li>understand and measure how customers discover your product or service on your website and what are the best patterns for conversion&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>monitor changes on the website and analyses the impact of this change&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>monitor customer expectations&nbsp; &nbsp;</li></ul>HotJar is a commercial tool but provides a free account to start working with that.&nbsp;<h2>A/B Testing and personalisation&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;</h2>Tweaking web pages and improving customer experience without A/B testing tools is like making design decisions based on a crystal ball. For some reason, end-users prefer the button on the left, but sometimes the button on the right works better.A/B testing tools allow you to build experimental variants of your page and measure which version has better conversion and drop-off rates. You can easily create two or more alternatives that differ in colours, content or images.When you know what variant works better, you may need to differentiate the page depending on the acquisition channel. Personalisation tools allow you to adjust the website content, colours, images or even structure for a particular advertisement campaign, technical parameters (mobile devices, browsers, specific os), location or demographic characteristics.Even if the A/B testing and personalisation concept sounds complicated, its implementation is simple and does not need HTML programming skills. Most of the Platform provides a WYSIWYG editor, which you can use to modify the website content, colours or images and provide your variants.The following tools do both A/B testing and personalisation. The ease of integration with the website (through Tag Manager) and visual editor is a common feature in my selection.&nbsp;<h3>Google Optimise</h3>&nbsp;Google knows how to do web marketing. Google Optimise, the part of the Google (TBD: the Platform’s name) Platform, is a leader with 99% market share (TBD: the market share). The strong point of the application is native integration with other tools from Google and its visual editor. The commonly commented pitfall is data privacy.&nbsp;Pros:&nbsp;integration with Google Analyst – direct access to xx (TBD) and yy (TBD: measurements, target milestones),&nbsp;&nbsp;integration with Google Adwords – personalisation for specific ad campaigns,&nbsp;&nbsp;an easy visual editor, which allows changing the website content, images and styles (chrome plugin)&nbsp;massive support from the community (youtube tutorials explains everything), self-service help centre and certified partners network&nbsp;&nbsp;it’s free&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Cons:&nbsp;the easy visual editor has its limitations,&nbsp;&nbsp;not clear privacy, no built-in consent management&nbsp;It’s a web tool.; it does not support native mobile technologies&nbsp; &nbsp;<h3>A/B Testy</h3>&nbsp;A/B Testy is a swiss army knife for enterprise-level marketers. It includes a visual editor allowing a quick start with variants and personalisation on the website and advanced developer tools for building server-side integration. The second one allows integrating A/B Testy natively into the portal, mobile or IoT applications. Contradictory to Google tools, A/B Testy provides a complex, self-sufficient marketing toolset.&nbsp;Pros:&nbsp;<ul><li>more advanced development option, the tool does not have limitations like&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>integration with third parties (data management platforms, customer data platforms, CRM)&nbsp;</li><li>build-in customer segmentation&nbsp;</li><li>they say they have the best customer support&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>clear privacy data policy&nbsp;&nbsp;</li></ul>&nbsp;Cons:&nbsp;<ul><li>the tool is paid,&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>challenging to trail the solution,&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>no support from third parties, poor community support</li></ul>

That’s why knowing your audience is also very important – you have to know how to adjust your language to the target group to be understood.&nbsp;<h2>Keep the 15-second rule in mind&nbsp;</h2>The research shows&nbsp;that you have less than 15 seconds to get the readers’ attention.&nbsp;At the time when we are all bombarded with information from every possible medium, including social media, you have to literally fight for users’&nbsp;attention. It will take them up to 15 seconds&nbsp;to decide whether they want to stay or leave your website or keep reading your latest&nbsp;article or&nbsp;Facebook&nbsp;post.&nbsp;Give them a good reason to stay. This means that you have to guarantee that your piece of content offers an&nbsp;answer&nbsp;to&nbsp;their question or an explanation on how to solve their problem&nbsp;– in about the first 50 words! That’s why headlines are so important but don’t underestimate the power of captivating images – these are usually the first&nbsp;thing that people see.&nbsp;<h2>Make it easy to scan&nbsp;</h2>This truth about the online world is painful for any writer.&nbsp;When people search for something online, they will keep scrolling or scanning texts until they find it. Often, they won’t even watch your entire video, but will do a quick check whether it has what they are looking for.&nbsp;That’s why good content is easy to scan. Make sure you break down your texts or scripts into sections that clearly indicate the content of each of them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2>Don’t underestimate the power of SEO&nbsp;</h2>A well-written content from the SEO perspective means it will be attractive for Google and appear on top of the search results. You should always plan writing the article starting from understating the keywords and search terms that would lead to its discovery in google. Use the&nbsp;keywords&nbsp;consciously – it will make the task of managing your content much easier too!&nbsp;If you’re just starting out with your content creation journey, consider creating&nbsp;3&nbsp;different&nbsp;versions of&nbsp;one piece of&nbsp;content. They&nbsp;should&nbsp;have&nbsp;the same&nbsp;context&nbsp;but&nbsp;be&nbsp;written using different keywords. After a few&nbsp;days,&nbsp;web analytics&nbsp;should give you good insights as to which piece best resonated with your audience.&nbsp;&nbsp;Always remember that you first have to help the search engine ‘understand’ what your text is about so that it&nbsp;can show it when&nbsp;relevant&nbsp;queries are being searched for.&nbsp;Google and Facebook&nbsp;is&nbsp;filtering content based on the reader’s digital footprint theirs AI try to understand the article content and show the reader the best fit.&nbsp;There are numerous assistive technologies that can help you with this task. Schema.org is one example of a tool that&nbsp;could be&nbsp;instrumental in contextualizing the content.&nbsp;<h2>Stick to&nbsp;simple language&nbsp;</h2>If you worry that simple language is dumb – don’t. There’s nothing more erroneous than that.&nbsp;Using difficult, or&nbsp;otherwise&nbsp;rarely used words&nbsp;sounds elitist, and leaves the reader with an impression that the text simply isn’t for them&nbsp;(unless you’re trying to impress the academics). Even Einstein once said,&nbsp;“If you&nbsp;can‘t&nbsp;explain&nbsp;it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”&nbsp;If you want readers to digest your content and keep coming back for more, make sure you speak to them in a language that is simple to understand and you’ll quickly be surprised with the results.&nbsp;
